Blue Whale watching cruises in season
(late December to early March)
Comment on the likelihood of actually seeing Blue Whales
during a cruise:
Blue Whales, the largest mammals on earth, calve in the Sea of
Cortez. Unlike the Gray Whales that calve in the confined narrow
bays along the Pacific coastline of Baja, the Blue Whales range
over the entire Sea of Cortez, a relatively large body of water.
The range of EL DON is limited to a radius of about forty miles
from port during an eight-hour cruise. Velas De Loreto, therefore,
CAN NOT GUARANTEE that EL DON passengers will see any Blue Whales
during a cruise. However, with the abundance of marine mammals
in the region, there is a strong likelihood of seeing some marine
mammals even if the Blue Whales do not happen to be in the area.
In particular, pods of porpoise frequently swim with EL DON on
the outbound and inbound legs of a cruise which makes for great
photograph opportunities and a lot of fun. We are sure that you
will enjoy your day on the water!
